What is a Prosthodontist?

Fact: Less than 2% of all Dentists are Prosthodontists.
In layman's terms, a Prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed three or more years of additional education after dental school to become an expert in the restoration and replacement of teeth.
The extended education and hands-on training a Prosthodontist receives must be done at a program accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA). This program focuses on the treatment of teeth that are damaged, or missing, (due to decay, wear, trauma, absent, etc.), and the correction of a displeasing smile. They use all forms of tooth restoration and replacement.
By undertaking the additional training, Prosthodontists are trained to diagnose and treat underlying problems as part of an overall treatment program. Prosthodontists are trained to enhance the esthetic and comfort of dental restorations, while using the latest materials and techniques. For example, when considering an esthetic replacement for a missing tooth, a Prosthodontist will factor in: your facial form, length and position of your lip, condition of adjacent teeth, overall condition of the mouth and your general health; in addition to the affected area.
